NASA - project cancelled

An interesting NASA project has come to light if only because of its recent cancellation.

In 2003 a Van RV-8A kit was purchased from Vans Aircraft "as an optionally piloted aircraft" It was never put together and parts are still in three crates at Wallops Island, VA.

The aircraft is now - 13 years later -offered for sale and although its c/n is not given, this should come to light when purchased for US registration.

Two immediate questions come to mind. What was its real research purpose, and why has it suddenly surfaced!
